Dick Gregory on The Merv Griffin Show - 9/14/1965 [Reelin' In The Years Archives]
Here's a small segment from Merv's interview with comedian/civil rights leader, Dick Gregory one month after he was shot in the Watts riots in L.A. Sadly, his poignant message still resonates today as much as it did 50 years ago.
Merv Griffin had over 5000 guests appear on his show from 1963-1986. Footage from the Merv Griffin Show is available for licensing to all forms of media through Reelin' In The Years Productions. www.reelinintheyears.com.

Wonderful and historic footage. It's a shame it is owned by a company that is determined to let very little of it be seen by the very people who would enjoy it. It is marketed like an infomercial, complete with logos and intrusive graphics. Reelin' in the Years should be mindful of the cold hard reality that this vintage material has a shelf life: while there are folks alive now who would watch and enjoy this classic footage, future generations may not have much interest. Why? Because they will have no connection to these (by then) long dead stars, and more significantly, it's in BLACK & WHITE! Young people have no interest in anything that is not digital HD and full color! This is not conjecture on my part - it's just a fact. Doubt that? Ask around.

That guy predicting Scott was "going to do well" with his singing career entered rehab the next day to deal with his losing grip on reality and the fact that he was drinking 24/7 to drown out that song now that he had heard it in its entirety. Years of institutions followed as the continuous sound of Scott flatly warbling "You've got, such a pretty face..." drove him to the brink of homicidal madness.

Pryor was extremely nervous here. You could tell. It was very awkward. I think Groucho told him to form his own identity, which he most certainly did. Not sure if Groucho appreciated it though. Groucho didn't like what was called being "filthy", but we sure loved it. Redd Foxx was another very talented but blue performer. I bet Foxx made sure to help Pryor in his career. Moms Mabley was another before. Would be interesting to know what Pryor thought of her. I bet he adored her.

Ford was the right person in the right place at the right time. The US didn't need any superstar in the wake of Nixon's resignation, it needed a steady hand to keep the ship of state going forward and he did that. In the end, he probably did the right thing. Side note, that is the most 70s suit I have EVER seen.
